Terre d'Hermès is one of the great modern classics of men's perfumery. It was launched in 2006, composed by Jean-Claude Ellena, then Hermès' in-house perfumer, and won the FiFi Award for Fragrance of the Year, Men's Luxe, in 2007. Fragrantica files it as a woody spicy fragrance for men. Nearly twenty years on, it still smells like nothing else in a department store.
This guide is about the original eau de toilette.
The notes
- Opens: orange, grapefruit
- Heart: pepper, pelargonium, flint
- Dries down: vetiver, cedar, patchouli, benzoin
How it wears
It opens on citrus, but not the sweet kind: orange for warmth, grapefruit for bitterness. Then comes the signature that made it famous, a dry, mineral note of flint and pepper, like warm stone, with the green, rosy leafiness of pelargonium.
The base is vetiver and cedar, earthy and woody, with patchouli for depth and benzoin for a touch of warmth. The result is clean, dry and grown-up: a fragrance about earth and stone, not sweetness. It suits a suit as well as a T-shirt.
When to wear it
- Best: all year, daytime, the office, anywhere you want to smell put-together without being loud.
- Egyptian summer: it works. The citrus and dry woods handle the heat far better than the sweet fragrances that dominate today.
- Winter: it works here too, though some people move to the deeper Parfum in the cold.
- If you like: dry, woody fragrances, see our summer or winter guide for how to choose for the season.
Decant or full bottle
If you have never worn it, start with a 4 or 6 ML decant: its mineral, slightly bitter style is admired more than it is loved by some people. If you already know you love it, a 10 ML lasts a long time. When a sealed bottle is in stock, it is offered whole as well.
