Experimentum Crucis is Etat Libre d'Orange's nod to Isaac Newton's experiment with light. It was launched in 2019 and composed by Quentin Bisch — the perfumer behind Amouage Purpose. It is a shared, woody aromatic fragrance with a fruity, slightly unexpected opening.

The notes

  • Opens: cumin, apple, lychee
  • Heart: rose, honey, jasmine
  • Dries down: akigalawood, patchouli, musk

How it wears

The opening is the surprise: crisp apple and juicy lychee with a warm, slightly salty edge of cumin. Rose and honey take over in the heart, glowing rather than sweet, with jasmine for lift. The base is akigalawood — a peppery, patchouli-derived wood — with patchouli and musk, dry and modern.

It is not a crowd-pleaser in the way a designer fragrance is, and that is the point: people who like it tend to love it, and people who are unsure should smell it first.

Who it suits

  • If you like fruity-woody niche fragrances, rose with an edge, or the dry woods of Amouage Purpose.
  • Best: autumn, spring, evenings; cooler days in Egypt.

Why a 2 ML sample

It is a polarising fragrance at a niche price. An original 2 ML vial is enough for several full wears — the only honest way to know whether the cumin reads as warm or as too much on your skin.
