Guidance: the one to start with

If you only try one, try Guidance. It opens on pear and hazelnut over a thread of olibanum, then turns to osmanthus, rose and saffron, and settles on sandalwood and vanilla. It is sweet without being sugary and warm without being heavy, which makes it the most wearable way into a house known for its intensity.

Guidance 46: the same idea, turned up

Guidance 46 keeps the pear, hazelnut, rose and osmanthus of the original and adds rose water and bitter almond at the top, with ambrette in the base. On skin it is richer and rounder, and it stays close for longer. Outlands and Existence: the incense side of the house

Outlands is Amouage at its most classically Omani: frankincense and cardamom at the top, patchouli, anise and saffron in the heart, and frankincense again in the base with vanilla and benzoin. Existence starts brighter, on aldehydes, lily of the valley and rose, before frankincense and labdanum take over and white musk and ambergris carry it into the evening.

How to test a sample properly

  • Spray or dab on skin, not on paper. Amouage is built to change over hours, and a blotter only shows you the opening.
  • Wear it for a whole day before deciding. Note how it smells after lunch, not just at breakfast.
  • Try it on two or three different days. Heat, humidity and mood all change what you notice.
  • If you love it, a full bottle is a safe purchase. If you like it but not enough, you have spent the price of a vial, not a bottle.
