Amouage Purpose and Purpose 50 are by the same perfumer, Quentin Bisch, and read almost the same on paper. They are not the same on skin. Purpose is the dry, smoky original; Purpose 50 is its richer extrait, from Amouage's Exceptional Extrait collection, with vanilla in the base.
Purpose (2023): the notes
- Opens: olibanum, black and pink pepper, pimento, bergamot
- Heart: vetiver, papyrus, sandalwood, rose
- Dries down: akigalawood, suede, saffron, Mystikal
Purpose opens cold and bright — bergamot and pepper over the frankincense that runs through so much of Amouage — then turns earthy with vetiver and papyrus, softened by sandalwood and a dark rose. The base is suede and akigalawood, a peppery, patchouli-derived wood. It is dry, smoky and very Amouage.
Purpose 50 (2025): the notes
- Opens: frankincense, pimento, pink pepper, bergamot
- Heart: sandalwood, vetiver, papyrus, rose
- Dries down: akigalawood, suede, vanilla, Mystikal, saffron
The structure is the same, but Purpose 50 is an extrait and adds vanilla to the base. The effect is warmer and rounder: the smoke and vetiver are still there, but they sit on something softer and sweeter, and the whole fragrance stays closer for longer.
