40 Knots comes from Xerjoff's Join the Club collection, launched in 2012: ten fragrances, each standing for a different imaginary club. 40 Knots is the yacht club, and it smells like it. Fragrantica files it as a woody aromatic fragrance for women and men.
Xerjoff kept the full formula of the collection secret, so there is no official top-to-base pyramid. What the house does name is short and telling.
The notes
- Sea water and salt
- Cedar and woody notes
- Green notes
How it wears
40 Knots opens on salt and sea air, sharp and mineral, with a green freshness behind it. It is closer to skin on a boat deck than to the sweet "blue" fragrances it is sometimes lumped in with. As it settles, cedar and dry woods come forward and give it a backbone, so it stays a fragrance rather than fading into a vague freshness.
It is clean without being soapy and fresh without being sugary. That makes it one of the few niche fragrances that genuinely suit a hot day.
When to wear it
- Best: spring and summer, daytime, the beach, the North Coast, the office in hot weather.
- Egyptian summer: this is exactly what it is for. Spray freely.
- Winter: it works on clear days, but it is not what you reach for on a cold evening.
- If you like: fresh, salty or aquatic fragrances, read our summer or winter guide for others in the same spirit.
Why a decant makes sense here
Marine fragrances divide people: some love salt and sea spray, others find it too sharp. A 4 ML decant is a week of wear in real heat, which is the only fair test of a summer fragrance. A 10 ML takes you through a holiday.
